My wife, who I believe was also unhappy, frequently left the young children with me for me to supervise while she went shopping or got together with her neighborhood friends. That gave me the opportunity to easily drink at home without needing to hide. Soon, I drank daily in isolation, hiding the quantity of my drinking from my wife, secretly replenishing the supply in the liquor cabinet with bottles I hid elsewhere. It has been an interesting journey of self-discovery. I am much more comfortable in my own skin now which I didn’t think would ever be possible. My cup starts with the 12 Steps coming up and out of the inside of my cup, leaving the devil down inside. I also listed family which has been my rock and major support system during my journey. I also included my counselor, Diane, who helped me overcome hidden traumas that I couldn’t seem to part with. She was such an inspiration and blessing during my treatment experience. However more important things I’ve derived from sobriety are that I’ve learned to rely on a higher power.

I told my mom I was going to die from this disease, that it was my destiny. Behind substance use disorder is people – people with real stories of struggle and triumph.
